Individual Worth #1 and Good Works #6

                Hi! I am Panda and I just barely turned 12. I am so excited to finally be in Young Women. I really was excited to start because I was the last person in my class to turn 12.

                I have finished Individual Worth #1. In order to finish it I had to read Psalm 8:4-6, Jeremiah 1:5, John 13:34, Doctrine and Covenants 18:10, Abraham 3:22-23, and Joseph Smith History 1:1-20. Then I had to write in my journal on how those scriptures taught me that Heavenly Father knows, loves, and is mindful of me. How I know that my Heavenly Father loves me is that he helps me through my trials.

                I also finished Good Works #6. What you have to do is spend at least 3 hours giving service outside your family. I babysat a family with my sister, while the parents went out for free.

Family History- Individual Worth Experience 6

I am a little behind on posting stuff... I am finished with Individual Worth.

Oh well. Anyways, for Individual Worth Value Experience 6, I had to visit with a relative and learn as much as I can about my family's history and then create a pedigree chart. At the time my grandma was in town so she helped me out. I have lots of old and new family photos in my house, so we looked at a bunch of those.

It was really fun to look at old photos of people at weddings, graduations, and even people at the beach. One story about my family history is about my great- grandma's great-grandpa.

Frants, Severine, and Jensine Grundvig

He and his mom, Jensine Hostmark Grundvig, and dad, Frants Christian Grundvig were from Denmark. They were converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) in 1860 and 1861. They then decided to immigrate to the USA in Utah. On the six week long ocean trip, the son, Severine,  was one of the two or three children to catch the measles and to survive.

They reached the New York harbor on June 14, 1865. One morning, west of Laramie while traveling, Jensine got tired and stayed behind. Frants stayed behind as well. A band of Sioux Indians caught up with Jensine and Frants. Two of the Indians grabbed Jensine and rode off. Frants ran off to tell the camp, but got shot in the hip with an arrow. He took the arrow out of his hip and crawled back to camp. He and Severine got to Utah. Jensine was never heard from again and Frants later found out that she had died.

Jensine was the only ever Mormon emigrant  to have been captured by Indians in the entire history of Mormon overland travel. Interesting isn't is?  I have a picture of Severine Grundvig somewhere in my house. You can learn  more about doing family history at https://familysearch.org/ See you!

  

Spiritual Gifts and Talents--Individual Worth Value Experience 7

I completed the Individual Worth Value Experience #7.

For this Value experience, I read the required scriptures, then I asked three people to tell me about some of the positive qualities the Lord has given me.

It was nice to read these letters!

God gave each and every one of us different and unique gifts. These are a few examples of gifts my church leader, my dad, and my friend told me I have: faith, happiness, confidence, being selfless, creativity, integrity, knowledge, and many more.

I can continue to develop these gifts by praying, keeping my standards and striving to choose the right. I can use my gifts to lift others up and to serve. I know I am a daughter of God and that he personal gave me special gifts. -

My Hopes and Dreams--Individual Worth Value Experience 4

I am now working on Individual Worth Value Experience 4

You are preparing now to fulfill a unique mission on the earth. Read Doctrine and Covenants 88:119. In your journal make a list of your hopes and dreams for your future home, family, and education and some important things you would like to accomplish in your life, including becoming a wife and mother. Then write a plan that will help you achieve your goals. Share this plan with a family member, leader, or friend.

So, this experience has three major parts:

One--Read Doctrine and Covenants 88:119

Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God; - Doctrine and Covenants 88:119"

First of all, I should say that I like this scripture. I have it hanging on a wall in my home. Mormons are a temple-oriented people. We build temples,

The San Diego Temple

We believe that our homes are sacred and can be like a temple,

Home Sweet Home

and we believe that we, our physical bodies, are temples.

An especially cute one!

So...I love this scripture because I have a lot of work to do as a mother to make my home and body into a temple, and this scripture provides a formula of what a temple, or house of God, is like.

Two--List of Hopes and dreams for my future home, family, and education

At first, this seems like a silly thing to do since I'm 35, I'm in the throes of motherhood, and it seems like I don't have as much of a future as I did 20 years ago.

But there is always time to hope, think, and plan for the future, so this is great.

My hopes for my future (and let's say current) home

• It will be clean
• It will be a place that is full of the Spirit
• It will be a place that nurtures anyone who enters into it. - Keep in mind, nurture means to nourish, to enable and promote growth. I hope that whether it is a family member, friend, or occasional visitor, they will feel nourished--in mind, body, and spirit, when they come into my home
• I want my home to be a place full of love, light, and peace

My hopes for my future (and current) family

Above all, I hope that my family will come to know the Savior. I hope that my children will develop a testimony. I hope other members of my family will also come to know and accept the gospel. I hope that one day I will have the chance to be sealed to parents. I hope that I will be able to see my children go on missions, get married in the temple, and have children of their own. I hope that at some point in the future, Homey and I will be able to serve a mission together as a couple.

I hope that we will be able to find true happiness.

My hopes for my future education

I hope to continue learning every day. I know that every day can be a learning experience if I'm willing to be aware of my surroundings and what the Lord is trying to teach me through practical experience.

Not only that, but I really would like to go to Graduate School one day. I would also like to learn to speak Italian, French, and Spanish fluently. It would also be awesome to learn to speak German.

I also want to continue to strengthen my spiritual knowledge and education. I hope to be a life-long learner when it comes to the gospel.

Three--A plan to Achieve Goals

This might sound like an oversimplification, but I assure you it is not. As I look at my goals and hopes for my future home, family, and education, I realize that many of them are lofty and will take years to accomplish. There are many long-term, short-term, broad, and specific plans that will be made. For now, I will say that the main plan I have is to:

1. Pray for inspiration - I believe that if I have a prayerful heart and pray very specifically about these goals, the Lord will help to inspire me so I can accomplish them.
2. Read my scriptures for guidance--I know that the Lord speaks to me through the scriptures. Studying the scriptures will give us an added measure of the Spirit, which is exactly what I need to be able to do the things that I've listed in this blog post.
3. Attend the temple often--It strikes me that The temple is the model for our homes and our selves. If I want to make my home, family, and life like the house of the Lord, then it is a good idea to attend often. Not only that, but we often open ourselves to more guidance and revelation when we go to the temple.

My Dreams - Individual Worth Value Experience 4

I have just completed the fourth value experience in the Personal Progress Program.

I have many hopes and dreams for my future. Here are some of them:

• go to college
• be a good mother
• have a family
• have a house of prayer
• a house of fasting
• a house of faith
• a house of learning
• a house of glory
• a house of order
• a house of God
• have a willing family that will help anyone
• to be an example

To achieve my goals, I will strive to read the scriptures and pray every day. I will also try my very hardest to exceed in school and go to college. I will follow my standards. I will get married in the temple and have a family of my own. I will have family home evening with my family to teach them to have a love for the gospel.

Individual Worth Value Experience 1 and a Give-Away!

I finished Individual Worth 1. I had to read the following scriptures: Psalms 8:4-6; Jeremiah 1:5; John 13:34; Doctrine and Covenants 18:10; Abraham 3:22-23; and Joseph Smith History 1:1-20.

After, I had to write in my journal how those scriptures taught me that Heavenly Father knows me, loves me, and is mindful of me. This is what I wrote: Heavenly Father loves me because he teaches me with the scriptures and doesn't lie to me. He is mindful of me and wants me to love others. I know he is mindful of me because he sent me to a family with the priesthood and loving parents. He knows all so well because he created us all.

What did you learn from this value experience? How do you know that Heavenly Father is mindful of you? Does it make a difference to you knowing this?

I am also excited to announce that we are going to do another give- away. This time I am going to give - away a tie dye shirt.

This tie-dye shirt is hand-made by me...and if you notice, the colors I chose are red. I've been working on a lot of Individual Worth projects, so this is shirt goes along with that theme.

Patriarchal Blessings - Individual Worth Value Experience #2

Even though I have already gotten my Patriarchal Blessing, I still found working on this value experience very helpful.

I
A patriarchal blessing is a special blessing, given by the laying on of hands by a ordained patriarch. Okay. So, what does this mean? Well, a man who holds the priesthood and who has been called to be a patriarch can, when you have requested it and have been found worthy and prepared by your bishop, give you a special priesthood blessing.

In True to the Faith, we learn:

"Once you have received your patriarchal blessing, you should read it humbly, prayerfully, and frequently. It is a personal revelation from your Heavenly Father who knows your strengths, weaknesses, and eternal potential."

Patriarchal Blessings...pretty cool

President Monson once taught:

"Your patriarchal blessing is yours and yours alone. It may be brief or lengthy, simple or profound. Length and language do not a patriarchal blessing make. It is the Spirit that conveys the true meaning. Your blessing is not to be folded neatly and tucked away. It is not to be framed or published. Rather, it is to be read. It is to be loved. It is to be followed. Your patriarchal blessing will see you through the darkest night. It will guide you through life’s dangers." - Thomas S. Monson

I have to admit, I haven't been doing this as much as I should. In fact, I was feeling a little down and out the other day, and I had the thought that I should read my Patriarchal Blessing, but I didn't! I'm grateful for this chance I've had to do it now.

Our patriarchal blessings are very personal, and they are given for comfort and direction and for a time in our lives when we might need them.

I will tell a little bit about my experience receiving a Patriarchal Blessing. I received mine when I was fourteen years old. I had the feeling that I wanted to get it, so I talked to my mom and then my bishop. After meeting with the Bishop, I made an appointment with my Patriarch to receive my blessing.

I got my patriarchal blessing on a weekday, and I remember fasting all day long before I went to receive my blessing. It was kind of strange not to eat at school, but my mom and bishop had told me that being extra prayerful would help me to have the Spirit. I remember that I even wore a skirt to school. I knew that I'd have to go right from school to the patriarch's house - he lived like 45 minutes away. Fasting and being in a skirt all day at school helped me to think of what was going to take place that evening. I felt especially close to the Spirit throughout the day.

When I got to the Patriarch's house, I was a little nervous. I didn't know what to expect. But he helped me feel right at home. My Patriarch was Patriarch Brown. He lived in a small house outside of Philadelphia. He was a simple, humble man. If I remember correctly, he was a retired school-teacher.

One thing that was especially unique about Patriarch Brown was that his house was full of clocks. He told me he liked to collect them. He then taught me a little bit more about Patriarchal blessings. He told me how he prepared through fasting and prayer. He explained that he didn't know what he would say in my Patriarchal Blessing (or any patriarchal blessing, for that matter) until he was in the middle of giving it. The reason is: these Patriarchal Blessings are not for him to give, but they are from God.

Receiving my patriarchal blessing was one of the most spiritual experiences I have ever had. I felt completely surrounded by the love of God. I had very little experience with Priesthood blessings. I had never had a father's blessing, and had only received blessings in association with receiving callings. The Spirit was overwhelming, and I came away from Patriarch Brown's house knowing that God knew me, personally, and that He Loved me.

My patriarchal blessing has taught me of my worth and identity in life. Sometimes, I have a hard time remembering that I'm valuable to God-that I'm of infinite worth. I find that when I'm forgetting my value, it is because I'm forgetting my identity. It is hard to feel worthless when we consider that we are children of God. My patriarchal blessing has been a good way for me to remember that I am of great worth to Him. My Patriarchal blessing reminds me that not only am I a daughter of God, but He knows me, personally. He knows me by name. He knows my strengths and weaknesses. He knows the conditions of my life. And, above all, He loves me.

I will share one example with you:

"Recognize,...that you have been sent here. Your coming to the earth has in no way been accidental. You were sent at this time so that you might do more with your life than you ever could have done a any other time in the history of the earth."

When I received my patriarchal blessing, this paragraph made a profound impact on me. First of all, it should be stated that I had never met the patriarch before I received my blessing. He didn't really know anything about me. He didn't know that I was born out of wedlock, adopted by my dad, and that I had never known my biological father. Though my life was full of love, there was an element to my identity that made me feel like I was an "accident", or unwanted in some way.

My patriarchal blessing shattered this thought/worry. I am not an accident. Heavenly Father purposely sent me here, and He let me know that my life truly has meaning and purpose. It was a great blessing for me to know this when I was a teenager. This fact continues to be a blessing for me now.

In her talk on Patriarchal Blessings, Julie B. Beck states:

"You are never too young to start learning about patriarchal blessings." - Julie B. Beck

Of course, her statement is true. I think that I'd like to add that you are never to old to remember the value, purpose, and benefit of a patriarchal blessing. I'm grateful to have received mine. It helps guide and comfort me. It encourages and motivates me to choose the right. Above all, it reminds me of my individual worth as a daughter of God.

Individual Worth Value Experience 2 - Patriarchal Blessings

Well today I have started my Personal Progress. There are eight values. They are: Faith, Divine Nature, Individual Worth, Knowledge, Choice and Accountability, Good Works, Integrity, and Virtue. I am starting on Individual Worth.

My first day in Young Womens...My personal progress books...and my new YW torch necklace.

In Personal Progress there are required value experiences and after you finish six of those you do a value project. The value experience I am doing right now is to learn the importance of patriarchal blessings (Individual Worth value experience #2).

Patriarchal blessings are given because they

"declare your lineage in the house of Israel and contains personal counsel from the Lord to you." - True to Faith page 111

This means you will receive counsel or direction from the Lord to you personally and will tell you which tribe of Israel you are in.

You receive your patriarchal blessing from an ordained patriarch in your stake.

President Thomas S. Monson refers to our patriarchal blessings as

"A Liahona of light." - see his conference talk here

Your bishop and parents will help you decide when the right time comes to receive a patriarchal blessing.

Sister Julie B. Beck said:

"When you understand the meaning and purpose of a patriarchal blessing and have a sincere desire to do the work of the Lord, you should be mature enough to receive your blessing….. It is important to fast and pray before your blessing so your spirit is humble and teachable. Your personal preparation is very important." - Julie B. Beck
